The Komfy Kids Mission
Komfy Kids, LLC’s mission is to help children that suffer from hair loss (their own or that of a loved one) by offering therapeutic dolls and accessories, resources and support. The therapeutic Komfy Kids doll has been designed by the company’s owner and founder, who has had alopecia for thirty years. Our products help children build self-esteem and confidence while learning to live with their hair loss.
Children have hair loss for many reasons.
The top two reasons are:
Alopecia: An autoimmune disease that affects the hair on the body. When compared with most other diseases, very little is known about alopecia. It is not contagious, but can be hereditary, although in many cases, there is no previous family history. It has shown no tendencies toward one sex, age group, race or ethnicity over another. It can come on suddenly with total loss of hair, or partially over time. It can affect just the hair on one’s head, or all types of hair all over the body. There is no rhyme or reason for it as it seems to have a mind of its own. Although alopecia is not life threatening, it is life altering as it is extremely traumatic and has a huge psychological impact, especially in the life of a young child. A dermatologist will usually attempt to treat the condition with topical solutions or with injections into the scalp, which can be very painful. One never knows if these attempts to grow hair will work, and if they work, will they last? Sometimes a hair loss treatment that works for one person doesn’t work for another person’s hair loss. There are times when a person will try a hair loss solution for a bald spot, the hair grows back, and then another bald spot appears somewhere else. Much research is desperately needed if we are to find answers to even the most basic questions concerning this disease that afflicts over 1.4 million Americans alone.
Cancer: When treating cancer with chemotherapy, a typical side effect is hair loss. Chemotherapy treatment can last anywhere from a couple months to a couple years, with the hair loss occurring throughout. During treatment, the person is facing so many challenges: health, emotional, physical, financial, spiritual, etc. A child dealing with cancer, chemotherapy, and their hair falling out can be devastated. The child is taken on many trips to the doctors, the hospital, the oncologist, the hematologist, etc. Endless tests are done, the weight of the world weighs heavy on everyone and the parents of the child just want to see their child healthy and happy again.
A child experiencing these types of hair loss is under massive stress. They can lose their sense of identity, they are on uncommon ground and often times will face ridicule from their peers. Friends, family, and love are what the child needs to help them deal with their hair loss. That’s where Komfy Kids dolls come in. Our dolls provide your child with a friend who is just like them. This friend is warm, soft, squeezable and happy and greets them with open arms that say “come give me a hug, and I’ll give you one right back!” Komfy Kids dolls help your child realize that they are not alone. They also help them work through the issues that could be affecting your child such as loneliness, rejection, and new unfamiliar aspects such as sudden hair loss brings on (e.g., should I wear a wig, or a hat, or a scarf, or just go as who I am?).
Whether a child with hair loss decides to wear a wig or not, the Komfy Kids doll is their buddy. The Komfy Kids doll looks great with and without hair and so does your child! The two of them can travel to and from school or the doctors together, hair or no hair.
Komfy Kids prides itself on excellent service and high quality products. We take the personal approach with our customers. When dealing with hair loss and emotions, we want you to have a pleasant experience with Komfy Kids. We realize what you are going through, we’ve been there too. The ultimate goal is to see a smile on your child’s face. When that happens, we know that Komfy Kids has done something wonderful.
Komfy Kids dolls are also a great resource for siblings of a child with cancer or alopecia as well as a child that has a parent with cancer or alopecia. The doll allows them an opportunity to relate to the hair loss of the loved one, to become familiar with hair loss, and to associate the wearing of a wig with their loved one. The Komfy Kids doll opens up a line of communication between a child and a parent to discuss the issues and concerns facing them. It helps the child to come to terms with the hair loss in a non-threatening manner. The Komfy Kids doll is a great therapeutic tool for coping and getting through such a difficult time.
I have had alopecia for nearly thirty years. The Komfy Kids dolls have been an excellent way for me to talk about my hair loss with my children. It opens up the communication, allows them to ask questions about my hair loss, and ultimately to openly accept my hair loss and to better understand it. My children play with their Komfy Kids dolls and put the wigs on and off just like they see me do with mine. It has become a routine. The dolls have allowed my children to feel closer to me and I feel like they can understand me a little better now. We rub the bald head of the Komfy Kids doll together and comment on how it is “just like mommies head” as we smile.
I would love to see all children that are dealing with hair loss to any degree, to look at their Komfy Kids doll… and smile.
